How Does Hypnosis Work?
Our mind works on two levels – the conscious and the unconscious. We make decisions, think and act with our conscious mind. The unconscious mind controls our habits. In the relaxed state known as Hypnosis, we can communicate directly with the unconscious mind. This is why it is so quick and easy to change habits of a lifetime with Hypnosis
Can You Make Me Do Things Against My Will?
This is one of the biggest misconceptions around Hypnosis. People see these entertainment stage hypnostists on TV, and it certainly makes it look as though you can make people do what they don’t want to do. The thing is though, if you could really do that with Hypnosis then why do you still need guns to rob banks? If I could make someone do something they didn’t want to do I’d be walking into Barclays today and demanding they give me all their money and then promptly forget they’d done so! The stage hypnotists do make it look like they are making people do things against their will, that’s for sure. Let me ask you a question though,
Why would anyone want to go and see a stage hypnosis show?
Erm…because they want to see people act stupidly? Yes, definitely, they want to be entertained!
Why would anyone volunteer to go up on stage?
Because they want to act stupidly! I mean, there is no other reason to go up on stage is there?
So now they’ve got all these people on stage and they do a series of tests or exercises to pick the people they want to work with.
Will Hypnosis Work For Me?
Generally speaking, every normal person is ‘hypnotisable’. That is, people with an IQ of at least 70, and no severe mental disorders. Therefore, virtually anyone can achieve successful results using Hypnosis. Many people believe that only certain individuals can be Hypnotised because they’ve seen stage Hypnostists ‘testing’ their volunteers and assume the Hypnotist is looking for people who are ‘hypnotisable’. I can assure you that this is definitely not what he is doing. EVERYONE of normal intelligence can be hypnotised. What he is looking for is the biggest exhibitionists and the most compliant people, the people who will do what they’re told. Once he has them, he has his show! He has people on stage who want to act stupidly, who like being the centre of attention, and who will do what they’re told. So he is NOT making them do what they don’t want to do, he’s giving them exactly what they want.
How Will I Know If I Am Hypnotised?
A lot of people do expect to fall into some kind of unconscious state when in Hypnosis. The truth is that many people cannot tell the difference between the Hypnotised and the waking states. Some people feel relaxed and lethargic, others feel a lightness. One thing that people do notice is an inexplicable change in their daily behaviours.
When Hypnotised, you will be aware of everything. You will hear the sound of my voice, the sounds outside the room and you’ll remember everything. You will also still be able to think! This one surprises a lot of people. Amongst your thoughts might be, “I’m not sure if I’m Hypnotised” or “I’m just relaxed” What I’d say to you at that point is keep an open mind and follow along with the suggestions.
If I can compare Hypnosis to anything, it feels very much like when you’re lying in bed, first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Those moments when you’re not quite awake and not quite asleep, you’re in a kind of drifting state. That is what it feels like. So much so, that those times when we first wake up or go off to sleep are referred to medically as hypnogogic and hypnopompic states, showing their direct relationship with Hypnosis. We all experince Hypnosis every day without even realising it. Like those times when you’re engrossed in the TV, or a really good book. Sometimes, we get so engrossed and involved in what we’re watching or reading, it’s like you switch off from everything else. Then someone in the room might say something to you and you either don’t hear them or you don’t want to hear them. Many women complain about this when their husbands are watching the football! Another example of every day Hypnosis that most drivers will have experienced will be the “was it a red light” moment. You’re driving along, day dreaming and the next thing you know you’re at your destination with no idea how you got there, or if that light you just passed was on red or green…because you’re on automatic pilot! Your conscious mind has wandered off whilst your unconscious mind has driven you safely to where you need to go. So, when experiencing Hypnosis, don’t expect to feel some magical state, just expect to feel relaxed, because that is quite simply all it is!
Is Hypnosis Safe?
Hypnosis is completely safe. You are aware and in control at every moment and can terminate the session at any time. Hypnosis is not sleep, nor can you get stuck in a state of Hypnosis. Hypnosis is a safe, relaxing and enjoyable experience.
Do You Guarantee Results?
I never guarantee results, and nor would any Hypnotherapist worth their salt. If someone is offering you guaranteed success then be very very wary. Therapy is never an exact science and every individual responds differently. I cannot control anybody’s level of determination , commitment or involvement. Therefore, any payment you make is payment for my time, qualifications and experience, not for a guaranteed result.
Do You Offer Refunds?
I do not offer refunds. Offering a refund in the field of therapy, and in particular, stop smoking, creates a cycle of self sabotage. The human mind is a very clever piece of equipment, and when you are dealing with breaking habits the mind will do all it can to cling to that habit…it just needs a reason for doing so that it can convince you is logical. A refund for failing would do just that. Your mind will sabotage your good intentions and work if the promise of a refund was there for failing. I far prefer to work with the mind and offer a cash back incentive for succeeding rather than failing!
